Data visualization is an important skill for today's students. Not only do students need to be able to communicate in ways that take them beyond basic text, but they also must be critical consumers of information presented to them in visual formats. The links and resources below are a starting point for including visual literacy as part of the curriculum.

 

 

Build your background knowledge

• Visual Literacy on WikiEd:  provides a classroom context for visual literacy skills.
• Visual Literacy White Paper from Adobe: some propaganda here, but some research, too---worth a read.
• The Curious Eye includes background and tutorials for supporting visual literacy.
• The Association for Computing Machinery published Design Principles for Visualization, an article about creating more effective visualizations.

 

 

Teach your students

• Seeing Is Deceiving contains an extensive list of teaching resources, including professional reading, lesson plans, and supporting resources. 
• The UNC School of Education has a database of lesson plans relating to visual literacy.
