Overview
- Explore a Short Visual History of Charts and Graphs to learn more about how modern data visualization came to be, as well as the psychology behind early charts.
- Use the Five Design Sheets as a way to brainstorm ideas, develop your layout, and move into production of your data design.
- We all know that bullets kill...presentations. Learn more about the research behind this and why visuals are a more powerful way to promote understanding in your audience. Steve Haroz and David Whitney have also done research into How Capacity Limits of Attention Influence Information Visualization Effectiveness.

- Learn more about Anscombe's quartet and how data sets with similar statistics can look very different when represented graphically. You may also be interested in the 10 types of regressions and determining which one to use.
- Use GoogleFusion to encode and build a map. (There are many other easy to use tools, too, like Mapalist.) Or, try the SankeyMATIC to depict the flow of information.
Interactivity
- Use Color Cop to "pick" colors out of images, then apply RGB values in other situations, or use Pixolor on your mobile device.
- Was Vincent Van Gogh color blind? Maybe. You can upload and view charts or other images to a file converter that will show you how things appear to people with color vision deficiencies.
- View the Arts Heat Map online. Or, learn how to build it, as well as other charts, on Excel for Educators.
- Engagement with visuals includes the emotions they provoke, as well as the ones readers bring with them. Learn more about this intersection between emotion and perception or attend a workshop on Emoviz.
Glanceability
- Read a summary of eye-tracking research from Harvard to discover how to make visualizations more memorable.
- Everything old is new again. The American School Board Journal in 1922 published suggestions for using visualizations (not including pie charts!) as a way to improve administration. Basic standards for graphs (again, no pie charts!) were available as early as 1901. Today, you may want to use the Data Visualization Checklist offered by Ann Emery and Stephanie Evergreen or head over to HelpMeViz for advice.
